CPD Policy
Continuing Professional Development Policy
The Institute of Crisis and Risk Management, in compliance with its Rules,
requires all Certified Risk Planner (CRP) / Certified Risk Trainer (CRT) /
Certified Crisis Consultant (CCC) to maintain competence through Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) management programmes. The minimum requirement is
20 hours annually, or 60 hours over three years. At least 50% of the CPD must
relate directly to the application, implementation and evaluation of risk,and
crisis management, and/or crisis leadership and change management
Fields of Study:
CPD must be in one of the following fields of study...
- Risk Management
This field includes all subjects relating directly to the identification,
assessment, analysis, methodology, and auditing of risk issues, including but
not limited to financial management, information technology, commercial and
business fraud prevention management or corporate governance
- Crisis Management
This field includes crisis management plan, audit, communication plan, change
management, crisis leadership and research topics, the body of knowledge dealing
with recent SARs, bird flu, or other critical disasters, and any other related
subject generally classified within the crisis management discipline.
- Specialized Management Knowledge and Applications:
This field includes all executive management and managerial training; personal
development; management advisory services relating to risk and/or crisis
consulting services; industry-specific training (e.g., insurance, banking,
computer sciences, and finance); and other specialized applications. When in
doubt, the credit should be claimed. Should the CPD be disallowed, you will be
given an opportunity to make up the difference.
CPD Type Codes:
- Participant Credit (No Limit):
A formalized class is one that meets in a formal setting, and includes
1.an instructor;
2.a written course outline;
3.attendance that is required and recorded; and
4.a certificate of completion is issued to the attendee.
One hour of credit is equal to at least 45 minutes of classroom time. Non-degree
seeking post-graduate college courses may be claimed and computed at the rate of
15 hours CPD for each semester completed. A copy of transcript must be provided
with the CPD Reporting Form. In-house training is acceptable, provided that it
is offered in a formalized setting and meets the above criteria. Informal,
on-the-job training may not be claimed. Correspondence and self-study courses
are acceptable for recommended CPD credit provided they (1) require a final
examination and (2) issue certificates of completion.
- Facilitator Credit (10 CPD Hours/Year):
A maximum of 10 CPD hours per year is allowed in this category. Classroom
facilitator may claim credit equal to half the number of hours spent in
preparation for the first class. Subsequent credit for preparation of the same
class is not allowed. Full teaching credit may be claimed in every instance the
subject is taught.
- Author Credit (10 CPD Hours/Year):
A maximum of 10 CPD hours per year is allowed in this category that relates to
time spent preparing articles and books. A detailed description of the book or
article should be attached to the reporting form.
- Seminar Credit (10 CPD Hours/Year):
Credit for attending certain meetings / seminars may be claimed for a maximum of
10 hours per year. Seminars / Meetings must either (1) have a formal speaker or
(2) relate directly to the competence of the Certified Risk Planner / Certified
Risk Trainer / Certified Crisis Consultant. Meetings must be at least 30 minutes
in length for each hour claimed. Time for lunches, breaks, social gatherings,
planning sessions, business meetings, and similar activities must be excluded.
Full credit may be claimed for attendance of IC-RM programmes, and Council
Meetings.
CPD Record
Members are required to maintain their own appropriate records of all CPD
activities completed and sufficient supporting evidence for the Institute to
audit for at least three years.
Filing Dates:
CPD reporting responsibilities begin no earlier than 12 months from the first
anniversary date of certification and no later than 36 months from the first
anniversary date, at the option of the professional designation. No CPD is
required during the first year of certification (e.g., a CRP / CRT /CCC
certified on 01/01/00 does not have to accumulate CPD until 01/01/01). All
certified members may report CPD as early as 01/01/02 (12 months from the first
anniversary date) or as late as 01/01/04 (36 months from the first anniversary
date).
Note that the reporting requirement corresponds to the date of certification,
not the calendar year. There is a 60-day grace period for reporting purposes.
Any certified members not reporting CPD within this period may be dropped from
the list of Certified Risk Planners / Certified Risk Trainers / Certified Crisis
Consultant and may no longer use the professional certified designation.
Objectives of Education and Development:
Education is the greatest means for any individual to enhance their level of
knowledge. It also allows professionals the opportunity to expand and develop
awareness in other fields of study indirectly related to their specialized
realm. Continuing Professional Development is required of all certified members
to maintain their proficiency and core competencies.
